Preparing for War – #6 Unity of Command

We begin with the sixth week of our 9 week basic training course on “Preparing for War”.
ONE - OBJECTIVE: utter destruction of enemy forces… and the will to take  every thought captive to Christ.
TWO Offense/Defense: Sometimes a good offense is a Stronger defense. The strength is our confession that Christ is the son of God.
THREE Mass: Concentrate our forces to overwhelm our enemy. Open our eyes to see the Lord’s army around us. We cannot do it on our own.
FOUR Economy of Force The sword of the LORD and me!’ we do that with wisdom.
FIVE Maneuver Place the enemy in a position of disadvantage in your going out and your coming in. Fight the Good Fight.

I practiced what I preached last week…..at the grocery store.  I went with Regaina to help…key word here is HELP, and we started on one side got some chips, oh we need some cheese, oh how about some sausage links on the grill, do we have any hot dog buns….and yep you guessed I walking back and forth or should I say TO AND FRO  COMING AND GOING…..I told Regaina that I was doing my maneuvers!

Unity of Command – At all levels of war, employment of military forces in a manner that masses combat power toward a common objective requires unity of command and unity of effort.  For every objective you must seek unity of command and unity of effort.

In the military there are numerous ranks as you get up to Admiral or General and there are several levels of those too.  In our nation we have the Commander and Chief, the president. He doesn’t even have to have served in the military to be distinguished with that honor. Now that is really the CHAIN OF COMMAND. Not the Unity of Command.

The chain of command is the formal line of authority, communication, and responsibility within an organization. The chain of command is usually depicted on an organizational chart, which identifies the superior and subordinate relationships in the organizational structure. According to classical organization theory the organizational chart allows one to visualize the lines of authority and communication within an organizational structure and ensures clear assignment of duties and responsibilities. By utilizing the chain of command, and its visible authority relationships, the principle of unity of command is maintained.
Unity of command means that all the forces are under one responsible commander. Unity of command means that each subordinate reports to one and only one superior.  It requires a single commander with the authority to direct all forces in pursuit of a unified purpose.

In order to have Unity of Command, you must first have Unity of Effort in order to accomplish this. Miscommunication or Misdirection can be confusing and can result in a failure to accomplish the goals of the Unity of Effort. In order to do that we have to have a UNIFIED PURPOSE

How do we fail to see these goals? How can we confuse our direction? It is pretty easy, if we don’t have a map.  Last week I talked about a highway.  A road that leads us through the wilderness as long as we say on it. Behind us is called HISTORY (we should learn from it) In front of us. It is called OUR FUTURE. Okay maybe that is too easy because that example only gives us two directions….easy stay on a road…we have exits, and side streets and detours and whatever….or maybe we don’t have any streets we just have a desert.  Sand sand everywhere….which way do we go….it all looks the same.

Another example about Misdirection
Football Parents yelling at their kids telling what to do on the sidelines
                                                               i.            I have coached football for 13 years and so many times find the parents getting excited on the sidelines….usually the want-to-be dads….who never came to a practice but happened to make it to the game on that Saturday. I always tell the parents to yell and cheer their child on encouraging them…..but don’t tell them what to do.  Let me coach!
ii.            Come on Johnny run in there and sack the quarterback…..no! don’t tell him that…he is in 3-2 coverage and he is supposed to covering the pass……Oh I didn’t know…..exactly!
iii.            The Head coach is just that.  He has the plans for the whole team and understands the goals that they have set.

See there was a problem in the understanding about who was the coach.  After all you are told to mind your parents and listen to their instruction.  I cannot argue that. However there is break in our UNITY (as a team) if the parents are telling them to do one thing while they are supposed to do another. Sacking the QB is a pretty good idea….it just isn’t the UNIFIED PLAN.  The play called for something else. Not only was the UNITY OF EFFORT undermined but so was the UNITY OF COMMAND. The parent’s action had prevented that.

Too Many cooks in the kitchen  - there can only be one.

ONE UNIFIED PURPOSE – UNIFIED EFFORT – ONE UNIFIED COMMAND

924 uses of the root word COMMAND in the Bible.
500 uses of the word HEAD in the Bible.

In our biblical warfare we are directed to conduct ourselves in UNITY.

For brethren to dwell together in
unity!

1 Corinthians 12
Spiritual Gifts: Unity in Diversity 1-11
Unity and Diversity in One Body 12-31

Ephesians 4:1-6 1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you[a] all.

Ephesians 4:9-16 9 (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first[c] descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

Once we have been able to accomplish this we have won the battle. God will take care of the UNITY OF COMMAND as long as we clearly understand that he is the ONE and ONLY.

1 Corinthians 11:2-4 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Ephesians 1:15-22 15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding[c] being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 5:22-24 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

Acknowledgment is a first step but it takes more for us to just acknowledge. We may know who the coach is but our actions are necessary to accomplish the UNITY OF OUR EFFORTS.

There is a lot of noise going on around us.  It makes things confusing. Tune into the real message and be able to focus on the truth. Football stadium? It can be difficult to concentrate sometimes.
